What do you say to someone who wants to write but struggles with writing and is tempted to use an LLM-based chatbot?
How To Write With An LLM
Two rules keep an LLM from pasteurizing your writing: never take a word it suggests, and never let it encourage you. Then hand it all the tedious work.

Texting a Random Stranger Better for Loneliness Than Talking to a Chatbot, Study Shows
A newly published study of how college students interact with chatbots and human strangers showed talking to a random person offers more connection than an LLM.

Fight fire with pedantry
Over the last two years, I’ve heard a bunch of speculation about how to design a programming language specifically for an LLM. It usually centers around typechecking, formal verifiability, or context engineering. It’s a fun thought experiment, but always felt aimless. First, my experience has been that designing for humans is the best way to design for an LLM, as long as you restrict yourself to text. Second, being in-distribution is so critical that there’s no point unless you’re also training a frontier coding model.
LLMs reward expertise
In the 2010s, if you had technical gaps (say, you couldn’t write CSS), you had to either rely on a skilled colleague or just hope that the answer to your exact problem was out there on the internet. Today, everyone can write sort-of-okay CSS by delegating the task to an LLM. LLMs make everybody into a generalist.

WinGPT
Do you use Windows 3.1? Do your friends send you jokes and haikus written by ChatGPT, and make you feel left out? Do you wish you had the sum of all human knowledge at your fingertips? Or wish you had your very own AI chatbot on your trusty 386?
Artificial
An LLM is a computer program. We should talk about it like a computer program.

LLM cliché highlighter
Paste text below — or load it from a URL — and it highlights sentences that match known LLM clichés, including the tells catalogued in Wikipedia’s Signs of AI writing guide. Chain patterns like “no X, no Y” get a badge counting their items; tap or hover a highlight to see which cliché it hit.

Oh, I like this part > No AI-generated text in human-to-human communication > When our maintainers volunteer their time to review your issue, PR, or proposal, they do not want to talk to a machine. This is a basic principle of respect. https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@godotengine/116839550229253906
Wikipedia:Signs of AI writing
This is a list of writing and formatting conventions typical of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, with real examples taken from Wikipedia articles and drafts. It is a field guide to help detect undisclosed AI-generated content on Wikipedia: while some of the signs may be broadly applicable, some may not apply in a non-Wikipedia context.[a] Not all text featuring these indicators is AI-generated, as the large language models that power AI chatbots are trained on human writing, including Wikipedia. Many elements of AI writing can be found in editorials, blogs, or fan fiction.
A break from programming languages
This is a blog post I have been considering writing for a long time.
There are no lossless transformations of natural-language text
In my work at Clay I recently wrote an internal policy on acceptable use of AI writing by engineers, and I’m sharing it here. It’s my hope that one day better AI tools might be able to help us think, but until then I fear that using AI to write does the exact opposite.

You know what’s boring? Writing integrations. It’s a task you’ll do once, but you always need to do it right, which means carefully reading docs…

Hi, I'm David Perell.
I write, host a podcast, and run a writing school called Write of Passage.
