Dami Lee on Instagram: "What holds up a society? This art piece in Korea stopped me cold, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. 180,000 tiny figures. Arms raised. A glass floor you’re meant to walk on. The artist is Do Ho Suh, and the question he’s asking feels more urgent than ever right now: is it the collective that holds everything up, or the individual? Because both stories have produced extraordinary things. Korea’s GDP per capita in the 1960s was lower than Sudan’s. Sixty years later, it’s the twelfth largest economy in the world. Built on coordination, sacrifice, twelve-hour days, families who gave everything for the next generation. And then there’s the Western story. The entrepreneur. The innovator. The one who puts a car in space but somehow can’t build affordable housing or a high-speed rail. As the world order gets reshaped in real time, I keep coming back to this floor. Who’s actually holding it up? And does the person walking on it ever think to look down? Tell me what you think in the comments. #DoHoSuh #KoreaArt #ContemporaryArt #PublicArt #SeoulArt"

Leo Strauss
Leo Strauss was a twentieth-century German Jewish émigréto the United States whose intellectual corpus spans ancient, medievaland modern political philosophy and includes, among others, studies ofPlato, Maimonides, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Spinoza, and Nietzsche.Strauss wrote mainly as a historian of philosophy and most of hiswritings take the form of commentaries on important thinkers and theirwritings. Yet as he put it: “There is no inquiry into thehistory of philosophy that is not at the same time aphilosophical inquiry” (PL, p. 41). While much of hisphilosophical project involved an attempt to rethink pre-modernphilosophy, the impetus for this reconsideration and the philosophicalproblems that vexed Strauss most were decidedly modern. Straussespecially worried about the modern philosophical grounds forpolitical and moral normativity as well as about the philosophical, theological, and political consequences of what he took to be modernphilosophy’s overinflated claims for the self-sufficiency ofreason.

Are We Really Engineers?
This is part one of the Crossover Project. Part two is here and part three is here. A conference talk based on this work is now available here. I sat in front of Mat, idly chatting about tech and cuisine. Before now, I had known him mostly for his cooking pictures on Twitter, the kind that made me envious of suburbanites and their 75,000 BTU woks. But now he was the test subject for my new project, to see if it was going to be fruitful or a waste of time.
